Universities and colleges

Offering study and work abroad programmes for your students can be very positive for them and to your institution. It’s also good news for the UK as a whole, as the country currently has one of the lowest rates of outward student mobility in the European Union.

It’s all part of the Bologna Process, which established the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). It means that outward student mobility (studying or undertaking technical/work placements abroad as part of an HE course) is now officially a good thing: qualifications can be recognised across Europe and it’s easier to transfer between universities. The UK government has signed up to a target of at least 20% of students spending some time abroad as part of their studies by 2020.

It’s more important than ever for universities, colleges and other HE institutions to develop their status and international standing. Encouraging students to study or work abroad, advising them on the opportunities available and showing them the positive impact this experience can have: that international interaction all boosts your university’s reputation.

In this section you will find information about funding, the benefits of outward mobility and what you can offer as an institution.
