Postgraduate - Full courses
Thousands of students around the world head overseas for their postgraduate study every year - and an increasing number of UK graduates are joining them.
Why is that such a good idea?
- It can be a life-changing experience
- It’s a great opportunity to work with future leaders in your subject
- A Master’s or a Doctorate at an international institution will be great for your CV.
Master’s degree
You may find that your greatest problem is deciding where to apply to study for your Master’s! There’s a huge array of subjects on offer and many excellent universities and research centres.
Depending on where you want to study, you’ll probably find that universities will have different entry requirements: most will be looking for candidates with a relevant BA or BSc degree or equivalent.
To find out more, take a look at Masters Portal where you can search for a range of global degrees.
You’ll find that course duration differs and may be longer than the equivalent course in the UK. And tuition fees vary widely: some may be cheaper, others more expensive than courses in the UK.
UK Students Abroad’s scholarships and grants page is a good starting place for information about funding.
Doctorate degree
Embarking on a full PhD abroad is a challenging and rewarding experience, and it can radically broaden your career options. If you decide to study for your doctorate abroad, you’ll probably start by considering the type of course, and which institution to apply to.
Just as in the UK, PhDs in other countries can vary considerably in duration. So naturally you’ll take some time to consider the implications of living in your destination country for a year or more.
Another key factor will be the research facilities available at your overseas university. You may be lucky enough to be eligible for a research grant, but it’s worth remembering that many students fund their PhD privately.
There are excellent Doctorate degree programmes available across the globe and individual universities will provide detailed information about their PhD programmes.
A good place to start is Promodoc a useful portal with information and links for European doctorate courses.
