Grants and scholarships

If you’re a UK student thinking about studying abroad, how to fund those studies will be an important question.

If you want to apply for financial support to help during your time away, make sure you apply in good time - well before your departure date.

Specific short programmes, such as Comenius and Erasmus provide grants for students embarking on their schemes. There are also plenty of options available for those on different programmes.

It’s a good idea to ask your international student office about the funding options available. They’ll be able to tell you about any awards specific to your institution.

The UNESCO Fellowship Bank scheme is a global scholarship scheme that is designed to offer financial support for people who want to further their education overseas.

For postgraduates Commonwealth Scholarships are available for study in Nigeria and Singapore.

The prestigious Fulbright Awards for postgraduates are a UK/USA partner programme that funds study and research exchanges between the two countries. The awards support and finance postgraduates while they study in the US.

And remember, if you are studying abroad on a short course or year placement while completing your undergraduate degree, you can continue to receive your UK student loan. You may also receive whatever financial aid - grants, bursaries or scholarships - that you have applied for and been granted.
