Comenius assistants
If you are interested in teaching as a career, it’s worth considering working abroad as a teaching assistant as part of the Comenius programme.
Comenius offers you the opportunity to work in one of 32 countries, and combine teaching your own specialist subject with some English language teaching.
What does a Comenius assistant do?
As a Comenius assistant you teach your degree subject and also teach some English. You can choose the level at which you work, from pre-school through to further education.
You’ll be expected to work from 12-16 hours a week, and you can arrange for your contract to last from between 13-45 weeks. It’s important to remember that when you’ve agreed to a contract duration, you’ll be expected to see it through to the end.
Where can you go?
Choose from 32 destination countries! These include all the EU member states as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Turkey and Croatia.
You can find out more at the British Council’s pages on the Comenius programme.
What qualifications will I need?
You’ll need to have successfully completed at least two years of your university studies, and to speak English to native speaker level - but you don’t need to be able to speak the language of the country you’d like to work in. You should also be interested in pursuing a career in teaching (but not already have worked as a teacher).
