Professor Philip Garrahan is an independent HE consultant working on international developments in higher education. Until 1994 he held research and lecturing posts at Reading University, UCLA, Sunderland and Teesside Universities. He then became head of a social science department at Northumbria University, later joining Sheffield Hallam University where he was Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Development for nine years. He has worked as a visiting professor in the United States and has travelled extensively to promote UKHE in China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, and Thailand.
In his Pro Vice-Chancellor role at Sheffield Hallam he was responsible for the University’s policies on learning and teaching; the quality and enhancement of the student experience; and online learning. He initiated and led the University’s international strategy. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
He is also a member of the Open Educational Resources strategic advisory group, and of the government task force on Online Learning.
