Neil Kemp is an international education consultant who has contributed to a range of education projects internationally and has worked and lived in India, Malaysia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Indonesia. He was British Council Director in Indonesia and Sri Lanka and also was Director of Education UK Division, charged with responsibility for developing and marketing UK education and training internationally. He is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Education, London; Board member at Institute for Development Studies, Sussex and Open University Worldwide. He is professional adviser to the UK-India Education and Research Initiative and was previously a member of the Steering Committee for the Prime Minister’s Initiative concerning internationalisation of UK education. He is also an adviser to the London School of Commerce.
His first employment was as an apprentice in industry after which he studied physical sciences; his doctorate, from University of Wales, was in electron spectroscopy. At the Institute of Education, as a research associate, he studied and researched the economics of education with particular reference to developing countries.
His interests in higher education include national policies, institutional effectiveness, international student mobility and transnational education. His recent clients include the UK government; CIRIUS, Denmark; Swedish Institute; British Council; ACA, Brussels; SIU Norway; UK HE International; and OECD. He has contributed to education projects for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, DFID (UK), the European Commission and overseas governments.
