Dr John Mumford has been a champion in the area of workplace skills and the accreditation of workplace learning for many years. He currently chairs HE@Work, an organisation dedicated to promoting academic recognition of learning in the workplace. Previously he has served on the boards of the Universities Vocational Awards Council and Foundation Degree Forward, has chaired the Sector Skills Council for Oil, Gas, Chemicals and Nuclear, and has been a Board Member of Foundation Degree Forward for many years. Dr Mumford’s business career has involved over 30 years in BP senior management positions in Europe, Australasia and Asia. Latterly, as BP Vice President UK Region, Dr Mumford dealt extensively with BP’s reputation, governance and government relations issues. His role as senior industry figure in the UK included serving as President of UK Petroleum Industries Association, Oil Industry Representative on the UK government’s Motorist Forum, and Council member of the Energy Institute. In 2003, Dr Mumford received an OBE, for his services to the environment. Dr Mumford is a noted public figure for his work in alternative energy and the environment, particularly in transport. He has served on Boards such as the Energy Savings Trust, Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership and currently the environmental charity Green-works.
Dr Mumford received a PhD for studies in public risk perception in 2006 and through his company, Reputation Risk Consultants, advises businesses on the management of risk and reputation. Also as International Director of the International Road Assessment Programme, he is part of a major global initiative with the World Bank and FIA, promoting safe road investments in low and middle income countries.
