Catherine Walter was educated in the United States, France and the UK, so she has a first-hand knowledge of being an international student. She has written a number of books for students of English as a second or foreign language, and has worked with teachers of English in over thirty countries. She lectures and researches in applied linguistics and second language acquisition at the University of Oxford. She is also the Chair of the British Council's English Language Advisory Group, a member of the Executive Committee of the British Association for Applied Linguistics, and the Secretary of the UK Committee on Linguistics in Education. In 2008 she was named a UK Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellow.
