Professor Brian P Atkin
Professor of Environmental Technology, University of Nottingham, UK

Professor Atkin was the CEO and Vice-President of the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus from September 2003 to August 2008. Prior to taking up this appointment in September 2003 he was Head of the School of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Nottingham, UK. He graduated in 1971 with a First Class Honours degree in Geology from Liverpool University and was awarded his PhD, also from Liverpool University, in 1976.

Professor Atkin joined the University of Nottingham in 1974 as a lecturer in Applied Geology. He transferred from the Faculty of Science to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham in 1989 when he took up a position in the Mining Engineering Department.

During Professor Atkin’s term of office in Malaysia the University of Nottingham campus in Malaysia grew from around 400 students to over 3000 with a commensurate increase in academic and support staff. Construction of a new purpose built campus started in January 2004 and was officially opened in September 2005. The presence of the campus in Malaysia has enhanced mobility options for students at the University of Nottingham who can now study their degree in Nottingham and Malaysia, Nottingham and Ningbo-China or Malaysia and Ningbo-China.

Following his term of office in Malaysia Professor Atkin has returned to Nottingham as Professor of Environmental Technology within the Faculty of Engineering.
