Priya: British Council Intern

British Council Literature Intern Priya Minhas tells us about her experience on the Internship Programme

The British Council summer internship scheme attracted me because:

It is such a respected and global organisation and there were a number of areas that interested me when looking at the positions available and continue to interest me as I consider career paths. Unlike many internship offers, the scheme looked like it would be really rewarding and provide me with hands on experience.

Before joining the British Council I was:

In my fourth and final year at the University of Leeds, studying English Literature and Spanish

My internship was based in the Literature department where my major responsibilities were in:

Growing our digital audience through social media strategies and developing and editing content for our website. I also helped with research, updating our writer’s directory, attended conferences and our team away day.

The most exciting project I have worked on at the British Council during my internship has been:

It was centred on developing a marketing toolkit to celebrate our parternship with Aardman animations. It was a real pleasure getting to work with the other interns and grow as a group over the period of 12 weeks. We were given so much scope for creativity and it also became a crash-course in getting insight into other areas of the British Council outside of the Arts department.

My plans in the short term are:

In the short term I am thrilled to say that I will be staying on to help the Literature department over the coming weeks. Following this, I will be relocating back to the U.S. I am particularly interested in education and women’s empowerment so I am hoping to gain more experience in this area.

To sum up my experience at the British Council in one sentence I would say:

truly rewarding and valuable experience. I felt extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to be a part of the British Council and contribute to some of the exciting work being done by the organisation, even just temporarily! I have consistently felt inspired and supported by numerous people across the organisation throughout my experience.  More than one sentence – can you tell I have had a positive experience?  It really has been a pleasure. Thank you!
