Sagar Limbu: Language and Internship programme

During the summer of 2016 Sagar had the opportunity to travel, experience Chinese culture and undertake an internship with the Generation UK – China programme.

I’d just passed my second year of university when I received the email I’d been waiting for; I was accepted onto the Generation UK – China Internship programme.

The programme was in two parts; a language course and an internship. I was placed in a beautiful city called Zhuhai.

The thought of moving away from home for two months was daunting at first; however I met some awesome people from all around the world who made the experience much easier. They are now friends that I keep in contact with on a regular basis.

Learning mandarin for the first month was challenging, but I’m grateful for the way in which this helped me to become more determined, persistent and open-minded.

Living and working in Zhuhai had its difficulties.  I had to step out of my comfort zone and be a little more adventurous than I normally am but I believe this experience has helped me both on a personal and professional level.

I did a one-month marketing internship in a global sourcing firm and I found I was able to apply elements from my university course into the business practice, which was a rewarding experience.

Through my internship I developed an interest in a field I’ve not given much thought to before, opening my mind up to new possibilities.

The programme also provided me with an excellent excuse to do some traveling and explore the rest of beautiful China.

I visited a few of the cities nearby, like Yuangsuo, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, which was an eye-opening experience for me.

Being part of the programme was a positive and life changing experience for me.

I believe it has enhanced my career prospects and it influenced my decision to study international management at a postgraduate level following graduation.
