We accept requests to retain the French and Irish language assistants currently working at your institution. The period of appointment for retained assistants is 1 October 2021 – 31 May 2022; retained candidates are not subject to the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

To be eligible for a consecutive year, French language assistants must be a candidate from France, currently be teaching in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, and have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme before 30 June 2021 in order to protect their rights and status in the UK. If the French language assistant has come to the UK before 31 December 2020, they will not require a visa for their consecutive year. 

Please note that due to the UK’s exit from the EU, 2021-22 will be the last year that we will be able to accept applications for retaining a French language assistant as their visas will have an expiration date. Retaining an Irish language assistant will still be possible.
