The British Council is developing new strategies to encourage and develop international experience for young people. We believe opportunities for young people to develop intercultural competence through engagement with people of other countries and cultures benefit individuals and the wider UK economy. We aim to draw on our own experience of developing and delivering high-quality international education programmes, as well as working with partners and stakeholders to reach new audiences of young people, particularly those that haven’t previously had access to international opportunities.

This commission for a desk based research study will help to establish what is known from existing programme evidence and academic thought about the impact of international experiences in education, culture, languages and voluntary service on young people’s lives, outlooks and future prospects. The British Council regards international experience to include both opportunities to travel overseas, as well as encounters with people of other countries available in the UK.

A research partner with a proven track record of projects and publications in the field of international education, youth policy and services, internationalism or other relevant experience is sought and applications are welcome from well qualified individuals or research institutions and teams.
