The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) has been working with the British Council India to design and deliver a unique online course, hosted on the FutureLearn platform: Becoming a better teacher: exploring professional development. Together, our two institutions have created opportunities for international networking and learning among teachers, developing skills in reflection and exploring a range of techniques and tools for professional development. The MOOC attracted over 15,000 registrations globally in its first run, with 54 per cent participating as active learners. Drawing on research and content generated in the UK and India, the course promotes our expertise to a global audience and invites participants to use and adapt our learning for their own contexts, while sharing their own experiences within the community of practice.
The IOE team share their experience of working in partnership with the British Council to create the Becoming a better teacher online course:
Supporting teacher professional development is an important dimension of the IOE’s work and includes teachers in resource-poor contexts. Working on the MOOC has enabled both organisations to reach new audiences using a digital channel to share their respective educational expertise and help teachers take ownership of their own professional development to improve their pedagogical practice as well as the learning experiences of the pupils they teach.
Quotes from course participants:
Thanks British Council, UCL Institute of Education and the educators related with this course for arranging such an educative and informative course. It has given me the guidance to becoming a good teacher. I certainly going to use many of these tips and methods and also going to explore thoroughly all the links uploaded here during this course.
It was my first online course and I must say a knowledge, information and a platform that you gave me I never ever gained before. Your way of exploration are very easy that gave me courage to participate and share my thinking to you. I really not only enjoyed, I learned a lot. Now many things are cleared in my mind. I will not feel hesitation to implement these in my class and with my learners. Now I want to be a long life learner.
