Children in a classroom in Kenya

International mother language day on 21 February 2017 was marked by the British Council/ Bristol University textbook roundtable held in Cape Town. The event brought together the South African Department of Basic Education (DBE), the big four publishers: Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Macmillan and Pearson, and academics from the three Cape Town based universities: the University of Cape Town, (UCT,) the University of Western Cape (UWC) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The mix of participants made for a lively and passionate discussion on the need for accessible textbooks in English, especially for learners who have limited proficiency in it.

Conclusions from the British Council/ Bristol University textbook roundtable held in Cape Town can be downloaded from the documents section below.
