Notably,

Before I begin to process your request could you please clarify what you mean by ‘activities’? The term ‘activities’ is quite general and open to interpretation therefore I would be grateful if you could be more specific about the spend information you are interested in. 

Once you have clarified the above I can begin to process your request. Please note that no further action will be taken until we receive clarification from you.

Many thanks for your quick reply. 

I am concerned really with everything that the British Council undertakes in regards to the particular country, so for example Educational courses, Language courses, Arts projects (such as the Shakespeare Lives), including the running costs of the British Council. 

In short, the entire budget/running costs of the British Council for each of the named countries.

Thank you for your request for information dated 3 August 2016, and further clarified on 4 August 2016, concerning the running costs/entire budget spent on activities in three countries British Council operates in. Your request has been handled under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000 and has been passed to me for reply.

I can confirm, under section 1 (1) (a) of the FOIA, that the British Council does hold some, but not all, of the information you have requested.

For your ease of reference, I have restated your questions below in bold and have provided our response beneath each question.

1. Are you able to inform me how much The British Council spent on activities in China in 2010, 2012 and 2015 (or 2014 if 2015 data is not available)?

2012-13 - £58,699,492
