The Request

received on 18 january 2016

Good morning,

I was looking at the British Council's Shakespeare program: http://www.shakespearelives.org/

I was wondering how much the British Council allocates to the program globally each year, with a breakdown of spending per country? I was also wondering how long the programme has been running?

Much appreciated,

Dear

Thank you for your request for information dated 18 January 2016 concerning the Shakespeare Lives programme. Your request has been handled under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000 and has been passed to me for reply.

I can confirm, under section 1 (1) (a) of the FOIA, that the British Council does hold some, but not all, of the information you have requested.

For your ease of reference, I have restated your request below in bold and have provided our response beneath.

I was wondering how much the British Council allocates to the program globally each year, with a breakdown of spending per country? I was also wondering how long the programme has been running?

Total core funding from British Council reserves is £1m for financial year 2015/16 and £1m for financial year 2016/17.

Total core funding from the GREAT Britain campaign matches this and is also £1m for 2015/16 and £1m (to be confirmed) for 2016/17.

The programme runs from January to December 2016 although some development and preparation work was done in 2015.

This funding primarily supports the production of central design, project and social media campaign assets as well as licences and opportunities for showcasing film and other creative content internationally.

Separately, country and regional teams in British Council and other GREAT partners in the UK and at post overseas, are planning Shakespeare Lives activity in their countries using regular annual funding. These plans are in the process of being finalised and confirmed now. The Shakespeare Lives programme runs across all British Council strategic business areas and works in partnership with many UK cultural partners. More details of the programme are available on the website.

VSO are the Shakespeare Lives international charity partner for the Play Your Part campaign which is an important element of the programme.

The GREAT priority market countries include:
China
India
USA
Brazil
Mexico
South Korea
Indonesia
Turkey
Poland
France
Germany
Japan

We do not have country spend breakdowns as we are not allocating funds by country or region.

I have provided a link to the Shakespeare Lives website, which you may find useful.

I hope the information provided has been useful.
