Algerian Higher Education delegation visit marks collaboration with UK universities
Up to 500 Algerian fully funded PhD students to study in UK over next five years in a new multi-million pound programme
A high level delegation of higher education professionals from Algerian universities is visiting the UK this week to discuss collaboration with UK universities on Algerian Government PhD scholarships.
Facilitated by the British Council and British Embassy, the visit marks the recent announcement of a new multi-million pound Algerian government funded scholarship programme in which up to 500 Algerian fully funded PhD students are set to study in the UK over the next five years.
Whilst in the UK, the delegation will meet with senior academics from 15 of the top English departments in UK universities to discuss a framework for cooperation at a workshop in London.
The delegation will also visit six different universities in a bid to exchange UK and Algerian approaches to the learning and teaching of English Language, English Literature and Applied Linguistics.
Commenting on the visit, the British Ambassador Martyn Roper said: “I am delighted to see this major visit, soon after our recent agreement, to connect UK and Algerian English academics and university departments and take forward this important new PhD initiative.”
Martin Daltry, Director British Council Algeria, added: “This visit will look at how we can best facilitate the placement of Algerian doctoral candidates in UK universities. We are also keen to develop new relationships and partnerships linking British and Algerian universities to strengthen English language teaching, learning and research here. I believe this initiative over the next decade has great potential to develop English skills in Algeria and greater mutual knowledge and understanding between our two countries more broadly.”
The British Council has proposed to manage the placement in UK universities of the PhD initiative students, who will be selected by competition by the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The first cohort of students will start this academic year 2014/15.
Individuals interested in the scholarships should contact their university for more details on the selection criteria or check the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research website regarding ‘’La Formation Résidentielle à l’Etranger’’ at: https://www.mesrs.dz/concours.
