Drawing on the long and varied experience of retired British Council colleagues, the Oral History project captures the challenges, successes and sometimes the failures of the British Council from its earliest days through the personal accounts of those involved.

Partnership with the British Library ensures a consistent approach to the interviews, and the recordings are lodged with the British Library to provide a digital resource for future researchers. It can be found in the British Library Sound and Moving image collection under reference C1083.

Extracts from the first phase of interviews were published as part of the Council’s 75th anniversary celebrations in the booklet entitled ‘As We Were’.
