India, Nigeria and Brazil are countries with large Higher Education systems where online delivery and technology-enabled learning have huge potential to reboot their higher education ecosystem and allow access to learning at scale. Flexible, affordable online delivery could empower individual students of all backgrounds. In turn, this could help to achieve national economic goals and drive sustainable development in communities.

But digital delivery on this scale does not come without significant challenges and questions, such as:

  • Is the infrastructure across the country sufficiently robust?
  • To what extent is there a recognition of, and commitment to build, the distinct study skills required for successful online learning?
  • How can we show the value of online learning to students, families and employers for whom 'higher education' means going to a physical university building?

  • importantly, how can global south-north collaborations help to address these challenges and build capacity for sustainable global HE development?
