Going Global 2018 session

In this session we will look at social impact as a genuine strategic driver for higher education.  Our speakers will look at some key themes in order to highlight and share best practice in improved social outcomes through higher education, forge and strengthen partnerships and collaboration for improved social impact across the sector, and inform government policy on the vital role of higher education in creating and ensuring societal good.

After hearing from our speakers, there will be an opportuntiy for you to ask your questions to the panel.

João Amaro de Matos

Vice Rector, Nova University Lisbon

João Amaro de Matos is Vice Rector of Nova University Lisbon, responsible for the International Development and Strategy of the institution, including accreditations, rankings, mobility, cooperation projects, and contributions to networks and alliances. His team has created a database of the Nova Community around the world that is used to support a strategy of communication, fund raising, placement of talent and international recruitment.

Peretz Lavie

Peretz Lavie is a world-renowned expert on the psychophysiology of sleep and sleep disorders. He was President of the Technion University in Israel from 2009-2019, where he was instrumental in accelerating the ascent of Technion to one of the world’s top institutes for science. During his tenure, he oversaw an astonishing improvement in the inclusion of Arab minority students at Technion, with numbers of Arabic-speaking students and Arab female students increasing by 200% and 350%, respectively.

Rachel Sandison

Executive Director External Relations and Vice Principal, University of Glasgow

Rachel's responsibilities include domestic and international student recruitment and marketing, corporate and strategic marketing, undergraduate and postgraduate admissions, international affairs and widening participation. She is a chartered marketer and chair of the Glasgow Economic Leadership HE/FE Marketing group. She is a member of the CIM HE Market Interest Group, the Universities Marketing Forum, Universities Scotland International Committee and sits on a number of sector advisory boards.

Simon Guy

Global Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Lancaster University

Simon's remit is to develop, connect and lead Lancaster University’s digital, global and development strategy. He is leading on the establishment of the University’s new campus in Leipzig and continuing to develop the China campus, while strengthening connections between all international partnerships including Ghana and Malaysia. He is the lead across all of Lancaster University’s development, alumni and fundraising work, oversees the library and he is the University lead on sustainability.

Susana Catita

Executive Director, Ciência LP

Susana Catita is the Executive Director of Ciência LP, a Category 2 Centre, under the auspices of UNESCO, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, aimed to foster advanced formation and scientific research in Portuguese Speaking Countries, especially in Africa, contributing to capacity building processes among local academic institutions, in order to avoid “brain drain”.
