The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by United Nations Member States in 2015, are a universal call to action to protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. 

Serving as a platform for dialogue between several university leaders and student representatives, this webinar will bring to the foreground the challenges Higher Education faces to reach the Sustainable Development Goals by presenting the implementation of efficient solutions by universities. 

The session was moderated by Tanya Dudnikova, Student at University College London and Ambassador for Global Vision International, and featured contributions from: 

  • Bianka Stege - Director of Education and Society for the EU Region at the British Council
  • Dr Hiligje Van't Land - Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU) and Executive Director of the International Universities Bureau
  • Carole Meffre - President of Sciences Po Environment, Paris
  • Dr Jasha Oosterban - Director of the Institut Supérieur d’Ingénierie et Gestion de l’Environnement (ISIGE) at Mines ParisTech-PSL, a member school of Université PSL 

Alain Fuchs, President of Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL), and Aliza Ayaz, Founder and Executive Chair of UCL's Climate Action Society, were planned to attend but were unfortunately unable to partake in this session.

Alain Fuchs is President of Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL). Dr Fuchs is a Senior Professor and devotes his research work to the modeling and molecular simulation of confined fluids. He was President of CNRS from 2010 to 2017, and formerly Director of Chimie ParisTech. He served as the President of the physical chemistry division of the French Societies of Chemistry and Physics.

Bianka Stege is Director of Education and Society for the EU Region at the British Council.. She leads on designing and implementing the organisation’s work in 27 EU countries, promoting and enabling collaboration between the UK and European countries in higher education, science, research and social engagement.

Dr Jasha Oosterban - Director of the ISIGE at Mines ParisTech-PSL

Dr Jasha Oosterban

Institut Supérieur d’Ingénierie et Gestion de l’Environnement (ISIGE)

Dr Jasha Oosterban is Director of the Institut Supérieur d’Ingénierie et Gestion de l’Environnement (ISIGE) at Mines ParisTech-PSL, a member school of Université PSL. Her research focuses on life cycle based environmental impacts of products and industrial ecosystems, and their relations to corporate strategies and transitions. She holds a PhD in Environmental Science from Mines ParisTech-PSL.

Dr Hiligje Van't Land - Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU)

Dr Hiligje Van't Land

International Association of Universities, International Universities Bureau

Dr Van't Land is Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU) and Executive Director of the International Universities Bureau. For the past two decades, she has worked on making higher education a key driver of societal change. She positioned the IAU as lead partner network in the UNESCO Global Action Program on Education for Sustainable Development by promoting the role of higher education and research in addressing the goals set in the context of Agenda 2030.

Sciences Po Paris

Carole is a student at Sciences Po Paris, doing her Masters in Public Policy (specialty Public Administration). She is currently the president of Sciences Po Environment on the Paris campus. The association strives not only to raise the awareness of Sciences Po communities (students, employees, professors, etc.) to environmental issues, but also to contribute to the ecological transition of the establishment (training, research, campus life, governance, etc.).

Aliza Ayaz

University College London

Aliza is an undergraduate student in Global Health at UCL. She is the Founder and Executive Chair of UCL's Climate Action Society.  CAS educates, advocates and acts for climate resilience across campuses and cities, with a focus on diversity & inclusion. It aims to make climate action more engaging, applicable and affordable. CAS partnered with the UN and became the first student society to lobby parliament.
