Going Global session

This event took place on 1 June at 3pm, UK time.  The session generated a lot of ideas about the future of global learning and what universities of the future might look like.

It was chaired by the British Council's Director of Education Maddalaine Ansell, with contributions from the following speakers:

  • Ben Nelson - Chairman and CEO at Minerva Project 
  • Mariana Ludmila Cortés Alvarez - Founder of Edularity

Maddalaine Ansell

British Council

Maddalaine is a graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. She began her career as a lawyer at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before joining the civil service on the fast stream. Her civil service appointments included the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit, Home Office, DIUS and BIS, and she worked on a range of policy areas including higher and further education. Since November 2018, Maddalaine has been Director Education at the British Council.

Vivienne Stern

Director, UK Higher Education International Unit

Vivienne, as Director, works to support the UK higher education sector's international activities, and to promote its distinctive strengths overseas. Prior, she was Head of Political Affairs at Universities UK where she was responsible for developing and implementing the political strategy for the membership body representing 134 UK Universities. She previously worked in the UK Parliament for the Chair of the Education and Skills Select Committee, and as a Policy Adviser for Universities UK.

Ben Nelson

Minerva Project

Ben Nelson is Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Minerva, and a visionary with a passion to reinvent higher education. Prior to Minerva, Ben spent more than ten years at Snapfish, where he helped build the company from startup to the world's largest personal publishing service.

Mariana Ludmila Cortés Alvarez


Mrs Cortés Alvarez is the Founder of Edularity, Mexico and an educator who has been researching alternatives to traditional education for the 4th Industrial Revolution Era for over 20 years. She is a specialist in deployment and social impact of EdTech in Latin America and Africa.

She is former Vice-President of directors of One Laptop per Child and was nominated for the Excellence in Positive Change award by the Global Thinkers Forum. She is a Board Member for the British Blockchain Association.
