Pepe Julian Onziema – Uganda

Pepe Julian Onziema is an LGBT activist from Uganda. His human rights work began in 2002 and has twice led to his arrest. He has since helped mobilise for strategic litigation and Pride celebrations in Uganda. In 2012, Pepe was named a Global Citizen by the Clinton Global Initiative and voted Hero of the Year at the 2014 Stonewall Awards.

In 2014, John Oliver interviewed him on the television series Last Week Tonight about the human rights situation for LGBT people in Uganda and the show won a GLAAD award in 2015.

Pepe is also Programs Director at Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG).
