Koyuki Higashi – Japan

Ms Higashi is a key campaigner raising awareness of LGBT rights in Japan. She and her partner held the first same-sex partnership ceremony at Tokyo DisneySea, which drew massive public attention when she tweeted that she had been informed one of them would have to wear a tuxedo. The couple were the first to receive a same-sex partnership certificate from Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward.

Ms Higashi is also an author of four books which introduce public life as a lesbian to the Japanese. She is also the co-founder of the company Trois Couleurs, which aims to realise a 'diverse society'. Amongst other activities, the company runs an online community platform on Facebook for LGBT people to share their experiences and provides consultation for members.

In 2016 we launched a global social media campaign and asked our global network to help us find inspiring people who are using culture to promote freedom and equality, who are provoking debate, or are risking their lives to promote the rights of LGBT people in their society or country. We’re inspired by our fiveFilms4freedom 2016 Global List and hope you will be too.
