International science festivals

We work with UK experts and science festivals around the world to support public engagement with science.

Sofia Science Festival

Since its creation in 2011 by the British Council and the Forum Democrit, and under the patronage of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, the festival has attracted a large number of supporters.

It continues to grow in popularity, with famous UK science communicators such as Jim Al-Khalili, Robert Winston and Wendy Sadler all having participated. In the 2015 Sofia Science Festival, thousands of people visited over 140 events, including two sell-out talks by Richard Dawkins. In 2016, Matt Taylor from the European Space Agency will be talking about his exciting work.

Science Alive, Hong Kong

Science Alive is jointly organised by the British Council, the Hong Kong Science Museum, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Education City Limited, and sponsored by the Croucher Foundation. Every year for the past 22 years, Science Alive has invited leading UK academics and communicators in the various fields of science to engage Hong Kong’s students, teachers and the public in activities that promote a wider understanding of science.
