What is Generation UK–India?

Are you a Higher or Further Education institution in the UK? Do you already send or want to send your students on placements to India? Get involved in Generation UK-India.

Generation UK–India is a programme that aims to promote international experience and build engagement and trust between the UK and India. The British Council is working with partners to support up to 25,000 young people and professionals from the UK to gain experience in India by 2020.

Programme objectives

  • creating more opportunities for UK young people and professionals to engage with India
  • supporting UK institutions and the UK government in their aims to increase access to international experience for young people in the UK
  • developing the skills and experience of the future UK workforce increasing  its competitiveness in the global economy
  • building deeper, wider and stronger understanding between India and the UK creating links that will be the basis for future collaboration
  • internationalising Indian companies and academic institutions through the hosting of ambitious and talented individuals from the UK

What is on offer for academic institutions in the UK?

Generation UK-India can benefit your institution by: 

  • promoting the benefits of gaining experience and skills abroad
  • increasing the number of students from your institution undertaking international experience
  • helping with the development of new partnerships with organisations in India
  • supporting existing partnerships and placements with India 
  • offering briefings and training on campus or in India for staff and students

We are working with Indian organisations to offer:

In addition to offering placements, we aim to increase engagement with India by

  • highlighting the benefits of gaining experience in India
  • offering advice, guidance and training to individuals interested in pursuing opportunities
  • creating a network of alumni to inspire further participation
  • supporting institutions to develop new and existing placements in India for students

Generation UK–India so far

This year we have supported 500 placements in India. Teaching assistants have inspired school pupils across the country whilst on our cultural immersion placements, students, graduates and entrepreneurs have gained a deeper understanding of Indian society, education, technology and economy. We have also offered reflection sessions at the British Council in India for UK university groups visiting the country.
