About the Languages Teacher Training Scholarship

Are you passionate about French, German or Spanish? If so, you could receive a scholarship of £28,000 to train as a secondary-school language teacher in England.

As a language teacher, you can continue to use your languages every day. You can play a part in equipping the next generation with skills employers need. Good language teachers are in demand and there has never been a better time to enter the profession, with attractive starting salaries and long-term job prospects.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible to apply, you must have, or be predicted to achieve, a minimum of a 2:1 in a French, German or Spanish degree.

If you have a 2:1 degree in a different subject that demonstrates excellent language skills and significant knowledge, you may also apply.

If you have a 2:2, or predicted 2:2 degree in the language, a relevant PhD or master’s degree, or recognised equivalent and substantial relevant experience, you may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

You must also: 

  • be entitled to support for a tuition fee loan via Student Finance England if you’re a home or EU student. Residents of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will need to be entitled for support as set out by their country’s student finance body (Student Finance Wales, Student Awards Agency Scotland or Student Finance NI).
  • by September 2019, secure your training place on an eligible university-led or school-led (fee-based, non-salaried) language course in England for the 2019/20 academic year. The training place must be with a provider allocated ITT places via DfE and lead to achieved Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) status.

Scholarship funding is not available for trainees who want to take up a course that leads to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS). QTLS is for further education (post-16) and you cannot obtain QTLS if you are on a course for pre-16.

The final deadline for applications is 23.59 on Sunday 2 June. Successful candidates will be invited to interview in June and July, and scholarships will be awarded to successful candidates in July.

Train to teach in England

If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria, or you are not quite sure if teaching is for you, or if you are interested in training to teach another subject, there is advice and support available from Get into Teaching.

Follow Get into Teaching’s advice on pre- and post-application steps below:  

  1. Get some school experience. It’s important to make sure that teaching is for you, so if you haven’t had recent experience in a UK school, then Get Into Teaching can help you with their School Experience Programme.
  2. Choose a teacher training route to suit you. There are two different types of teacher-training routes. One is school-led, and the other is university-led. Both will give you practical and theoretical skills to become an effective and inspirational qualified teacher, but they are delivered differently. Find out more about different training routes.
  3. Apply for teacher training. You can apply through UCAS Teacher Training – here, you’ll need to make sure you impress each school or university with a strong application, Get into Teaching has help and advice on this. 
  4. Book your skills test. Once you send your teacher-training application, you’re ready to book your skills test. There’s plenty of preparation you can do. Find out more on the STA website.
