The British Council is aware that the ongoing situation regarding Covid-19 has significantly impacted the research and innovation community. We are committed to ensuring that people all over the world have access to education and remain connected, and we aim to continue to provide opportunities for researchers around the world during a difficult and unpredictable time.

Researcher Links provides researchers with travel grants and funding for workshops. The British Council runs Researcher Links in partnership with research and higher education institutions in selected partner countries around the world.

We also deliver Researcher Links under the Newton Fund.

Travel grants and workshop grants

Researcher Links travel grants provide financial support for early career researchers so that they can spend one month or longer abroad.

Who can apply for Researcher Links travel grants

Early career researchers, within 10 years of receiving their PhD, can apply. Allowances can be made for career breaks. If working in a field where a PhD is not a pre-requisite for research activity, non-PhD holders with research equivalent to a PhD holder are eligible.

The funding is available to researchers in a variety of countries. Each funding opportunity states the countries from which researchers are eligible to apply.

The funding is available to researchers based in a variety of countries. Each funding opportunity states the countries from which researchers are eligible to apply.

Leading or established researchers

Leading or established researchers can apply to be workshop co-ordinators and propose a theme for a workshop. It must be a joint application, with one co-ordinator based at a UK institution and one based at an institution in a partner country. Applicants can be of any nationality.

The funding is available to leading researchers or established researchers, as defined by the European Commission.

Early career researchers

Early career researchers, based in either the UK or a partner country, can apply to participate in workshops. Applicants can be of any nationality.

We define early career researchers as those within 10 years of receiving their PhD. Allowances can be made for career breaks. If working in a field where a PhD is not a pre-requisite for research activity, non-PhD holders with research equivalent to a PhD holder are eligible.
