Education Advisory Group

The Education Advisory Group advises the Education leadership team and influences how the British Council’s vision and strategy are developed.

The Education Advisory Group reports to the Executive Board. Its formation or disbandment is the responsibility of the Chief Executive. It is a forum for advice and has no decision making or executive powers.

Professor Dame Wendy Hall - Chair

Professor Dame Wendy Hall is the Executive Director of the Web Science Institute, and a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton.  She is perhaps best known for her pioneering work in the area of Web Science. She has been instrumental in shaping the agenda for Engineering policy and education, and her work has earned recognition as Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2009 UK New Year's Honours list, and as a Fellow of the Royal Society in June 2009.

Sharon Bolton

Dr Sharon Bolton is the Dean of Student Life at International Students House. She also runs the House’s Scholarship Programme, which offers up to 50 residential scholarships per year to non-EEA students in collaboration with university partners, and the Mary Trevelyan Hardship Fund. Sharon oversees a programme of activities designed to enhance the international student experience. Prior to joining ISH in August 2015, Sharon was Head of International Student Support at Imperial College London. 

Sir Robin Bosher

Sir Robin Bosher joined Ofsted on 22 April 2014. He was also the Director of Primary Education for the Harris Federation for three years. He has helped open nine sponsored academies and one free school. Sir Robin was awarded the National College Primary School System Leader of the Year award in 2010. He has led the London Challenge Primary Programme as its Operational Director.  Sir Robin Bosher was knighted for services to education in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Birthday honours in June 2012.

Jonathan Brady

Nominated by the Department of Education for Northern Ireland, Jonathan Brady is Principal of St Killian’s College – an all ability, co-educational college. He recently led the amalgamation of St Killian’s College and in its most recent Education and Training Inspection (ETI) the College was assessed as being very good with elements of its work outstanding. He is an Associate Assessor for ETI and is an Assessor for the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools.

Prof. Colin Riordan

Professor Colin Riordan is a British academic who has been President and Vice-Chancellor at Cardiff University since 1 September 2012 and was formerly Vice Chancellor of University of Essex. He is the current Chair of University UK’s HE International Unit.

Prof. Lesley Yellowlees

Professor Lesley Yellowlees is currently Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Science & Engineering, and Professor of Inorganic Electrochemistry, at the University of Edinburgh. 

Dr Janet Brown

Dr Janet Brown was appointed Chief Executive of the Scottish Qualifications Authority in 2007. Her background was in the private sector, working in science and technology. She worked in the electronics sector for almost two decades, spending a considerable time in the US with the likes of AT&T, Bell Laboratories and Motorola. She returned to the UK to take up a post with Scottish Enterprise before moving to the SQA.

Martin Doel

Martin Doel began his appointment as Chief Executive in 2008. Martin's previous role was Director of Training and Education for all three Armed Services, working in the Ministry of Defence. Prior to this he filled several operational support, personnel and training posts in the RAF. He was appointed OBE in 1998 for his work in support of operations in the Balkans and for his contribution to Anglo-German relations and he was appointed a CBE in the 2016 New Year Honours for his work in education.

Sir Roger Fry

Sir Roger Fry, CBE, President of COBIS Council of British International Schools. COBIS is a responsive organisation, open to current and future opportunities. The association has developed markedly since its foundation, changing to meet the needs and aspirations of its growing global school membership base. 

Prof. Colin Grant

Professor Colin Grant is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation at the University of Bath. Professor Grant obtained his PhD from Bath in 1993 under the supervision of Ian Wallace. As PVC(I) at the University of Bath, Professor Grant leads international partnerships with universities, governments and business, student and staff mobility and overseas recruitment.
