Since the EU referendum result of 2016, the British Council has been working to ensure that cultural, educational and scientific collaboration between the UK and other EU members is prioritised in any settlement negotiated on behalf of ourselves and our partners.

'Moving Beyond Brexit' recommendations

In September 2018, the British Council partnered with the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts and the European Cultural Foundation to run a workshop in Brussels. The workshop was titled ‘Moving Beyond Brexit: Uniting the Cultural and Creative Sectors’.

'Our Shared European Future' communiqué

In 2017, the British Council ran a series of face-to-face and digital events, bringing together institutional and policy leaders from the education, culture, arts and science sectors in Europe.

Participants proposed sector recommendations for policy-makers in Europe to help sustain the vibrancy and vitality that now characterises European collaboration in arts, culture, science and education.

These recommendations can be found in our communiqué, Our Shared European Future (PDF 85kb). They have received more than 600 official endorsements (PDF 625kb) from 28 European countries.
