Frequently Asked Questions

WILL THE SCHEDULE BE THE SAME NEXT TERM?

Course schedules differ from term to term based on the level of demand for a given course. Generally, we try to ensure that a wide range of courses are available at popular times, and to offer a broad enough range of days and times to suit all of our customers.

DO I HAVE TO BUY A TEXTBOOK?

Yes. You can buy your course book on your own from a bookstore, or you can buy it from the British Council Taipei at a 20% discount during the first week of your course. Course books will be available at the British Council Taipei for the first week of each course.

CAN I USE A PHOTOCOPIED COURSE BOOK?

As the British Council respects the intellectual property rights of authors and publishers, we cannot allow the use of photocopied course books in our classes.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THERE BE IN CLASS?

Classes have a maximum of 16 students, but the number of students in each class can vary.

HOW MUCH HOMEWORK WILL I BE GIVEN?

You will generally be given some homework after every class. However, we understand that many of our students are extremely busy, and are not going to get upset if homework is not completed.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO REACH THE NEXT LEVEL?

This depends very much on you. Some learners will begin studying near the top of a level, at for example, B1+.4 and it may only take them two courses, or the equivalent of 50 hours of in-class study, to move up to the next level.

On the other hand, some learners may enter a level at the bottom, for example B1.1 and need to spend much more time studying before they move up to the next level. Generally speaking, most learners require around 120 hours of in-class training to move up a level.

Remember that each in-class hour requires further study outside of class to review and practice language.

DO YOU TEACH BRITISH ENGLISH?

No. We teach international English, which means that you will learn a range of structures and expressions to equip you to use English to communicate wherever you are.

WILL I BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE TEACHER’S ACCENT?

Yes. All of our teachers are skilled professionals who are experienced in communicating with second-language English speakers.

ARE ALL OF YOUR TEACHERS NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS?

Yes.

CAN I TAKE MORE THAN 1 COURSE AT A TIME?

Yes, but you will need to consult with your interviewer or teacher before doing this.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS A CLASS OR TWO?

While it is obviously best to try to miss as few classes as possible, we will send a Powerpoint of the in-class notes to you after every class. This should help you keep up if you review them at home. If you miss more than two sessions in a row our student services team will call you to make sure that everything is all right.

I WILL BE AWAY ON A BUSINESS TRIP FOR 3 WEEKS. CAN I HAVE MAKE-UP LESSONS?

No. Unfortunately, our schedule does not allow us to offer make-up lessons. You will receive the in-class notes as Powerpoints, and you are always free to email or call your teacher. Be sure to tell you teacher that you will be away in advance.

IF CLASSES ARE CANCELLED DUE TO TYPHOONS OR OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS, WILL YOU OFFER MAKE-UP LESSONS?

Our policy is not to make up lessons cancelled due to typhoons or natural disasters. However, we will try to make up one class if the schedule permits.
