ACADEMIC WRITING

WHO IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR?

This is a 24-hour course designed to help you improve your academic writing skills. It also helps you if you are preparing to study abroad or need extra work on part 2 of the IELTS writing test. You will need to have at least a B1+ (intermediate) level of English to benefit from this course.

COURSE CONTENT

During the course, you will:

  • analyse many examples of academic writing
  • practice the skills you need to write effectively in an academic context
  • be introduced to a variety of resources you can use to continue to improve your writing outside of class.

The course covers the following areas:

  • the nature of effective academic writing and the academic writing process
  • analysing questions and brainstorming ideas
  • organising ideas logically
  • writing effective thesis statements and topic sentences
  • building organised paragraphs with supporting statements
  • using and understanding key academic language
  • writing effective introductions, definitions and providing supporting examples
  • writing balanced and persuasive essays

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • write academic texts of a variety of lengths more accurately and more quickly.
  • read and understand academic writing more efficiently.
