The game was played on December 18, 2009 on the territory of the business-centre Arcus, which uses green technologies in it’s development. The participants worked out projects of making the Horoshevskiy district of Moscow more environmental friendly. Among the participants were representatives of local authorities and local educational community, business people, creatives (architects and journalists), local people, European experts (specialists on green architecture) and Russian ecologists from such organizations as Greenpeace, WWF, “Zapovedniki” centre.
Film about the game
The aim of the game was to generate new ideas for making Horoshevskiy district on the north of Moscow a more environmental friendly and ecological place by including the following aspects: ecology and business, green architecture, eco-education development, ecology and culture.
The Future City Game also facilitated the dialogue between the participants, provided the exchange of experience among them and helped them to create a co-working space.
The game was co-organized by British Council, Ecowiki.ru project and Theories & Practices in partnership with Prefecture of northern administrative district of Moscow, “Arcus” business-centre (which was the platform for the game and which members were participants of the game).
Green team
The project is based on “green stripes” conception, which is mentioned in its name. It is a complex space which joins different types of infrastructure, raising the ecological level of the district. The project begins from zero and develops step by step. It includes different aspects, such as culture (creativity), society (community, services), business (working places, small and medium business).
This complex consists of different parts:
Cultural level:
- Communicative centre
- “Eco-Moscow” competition
- Open-air eco-theatre
Social level:
- Eco-bar as a place for discussing new green initiatives and projects
- Rethinking on old buildings
- Infrastructure for bikers
- Centre of eco-education
Business level:
All these infrastructure components are connected with each other and concentrated in one place – on the green stripe.
For example, eco-bar and communicative centre are situated in the building, which uses green energy.
Eco-centre can be used for business-objects expositions etc. Local people can use eco-trasport to get to this place and leave their bikes in the eco-parking.
The other bright idea is: one parking place=one tree. This idea requires involvement of local people, volunteers and sponsors.
The general idea of the project is to start from zero, from a yard in your neighbourhood and to develop step by step.
Yellow team
The project is relevant because of the lack of cultural objects in the district: there are no meeting places and there are too many offices and industrial objects. At the same time Horoshevskiy district includes Hodinskoye pole – a place which is full of free space for green projects.
Purpose:
Create “Hodynka City Park” eco-centre including the following objects:
- parks – green area for leisure and relaxing (“Hodynka Gardens”)
- educational centre of eco-building and development
- sport-centre (tennis courts, golf course, open air ice-rink)
- memorial museum of aviation
Ideas:
- Providing landscape gardening in the district
- Creating a centre for leisure and education
- Support for local people
Finance:
- Private investment
- Support of “Ecological house” project
- Support of local people
Blue team
Slogan:
Happy people breathe fresh air!
Ideas:
Creating a special zone for leasehold improvement along the railway and Zorge street.
In frames of project the following is planned:
- Building a glass dome over the railway
- Changing old garages and car service-centers into new system of multifunctional buildings
- Enlarging Zorge street to provide better access for transport
Purpose:
- Rising the ecological level of the district
- Developing of the infrastructure
- Attracting investments into unattractive district
- New workplaces
Business-plan:
- to set up a management company
- to receive city preferences for tenants and residents (flexible conditions to make the district attractive for investments)
- to set up a tender for investors/residents
- to divide space into smaller pieces for leasing
- to share these pieces of land among residents
- to spend first investments for building a dome over the railway
- to make agreements with tenants and residents for building special “Green City” objects (Stores, business-centres, cinemas, leisure centres)
- to enlarge Zorge street
- As a final step: to create green areas on roofs of all the buildings.
Obligatory conditions for residents in terms of rearranging the district and building new objects:
- separate discard of rubbish (dividing it into three types)
- 40% of all the objects, built on the tenant’s territory should be cultural or social (educational centres for children, hospitals, etc – the whole list of objects is discussed with local and city authorities)
Red team
The project “Green paradise” is a global visioning of how to make Horoshevskiy district greener which means not only tree planting but also making the lifestyle green. The team think that one can’t make an area really green without effecting its tenants’ lifestyle and thinking.
These are the most innovative ideas of the team:
- To regenerate the district as a brand which in a distant future will let to make an influence on the city;
- To reconstruct Begovaya street from a busy traffic and polluted area into a park by transferring transportation into a newly built tunnel and planting trees on the cleared area;
- To rehabilitate the river and clear space for apartment houses in the district area where at the moment there is a busy traffic junction
Purple team
The name of the project is symbolic where O2 is a symbol for oxygen and fresh air which Moscow citizens need so much. 20:20 vision is symbolising that this development is to be done by 2020.
The aim of the project is to create an ecological multicomplex “Hodynka” which will fuse big numbers of opportunities for green education, art, culture, sustainable development, green business.
These are the modules of the complex:
- Interactive museum of the city ecology (the museum will display alternative energy sources and objects, effective ways of recycling)
- Green lounge: space where citizens can meet Russian and foreign ecology experts
- Eco café with eco food
- Movies about ecology
- Eco theatre
- Exhibition of proactive citizens artworks
- Eco workshop space
- Shops selling eco household appliances
- Eco awards and competitions
- Eco events and festivals
- Wellness consultancy
- International conferences with remote participation to decrease travelling eco footprint
Resources:
- Expertise in recycling
- Governmental and private investment
- Human resources – expertise from various fields
First steps:
- Foundation of eco program for citizens
- Green architects award
