British Council, London Book Fair and Academia Rossica have held the series of seminars «Know how!» with the participation of leading UK book market experts. The series of seminars were developed as a preparatory activity for Russian Market Focus at London Book Fair 2011. The first two seminars were held on 2-3 September 2010 at the 23rd Moscow International Book Fair, in the International Lounge, Conference hall №7.

UK Book Market: key players and trends in the UK book market, the role of professional associations; opportunities for cooperation.

William Atkinson
Director of sales and marketing, Faber & Faber (UK).

William Atkinson is one of the most authoritative UK publishers. In addition to the successful work in Faber & Faber, he played an important role in the success of the Independent Alliance, the group of publishers established in 2005 to compete successfully in the market absorbed by publishing conglomerates.

Anna Rafferty
Managing Director of Penguin Digital, Penguin (UK).

Anna Rafferty came to publishing after a successful career in online media. Anna is responsible for Internet and electronic projects by Penguin in the UK which includes the development of e-books and applications, websites of Penguin, Puffin and Penguin Classic and e-book industry innovations.

William Atkinson

Director of sales and marketing, Faber & Faber (UK)        

William Atkinson joined Waterstones as a bookseller in 1985 having graduated the previous year. He opened and ran a number of shops finishing in Hampstead in 1994. He then joined Faber as Paperback Product Manager and worked in a number of sales and marketing roles until being made Sales and Marketing Director in 2007. Will has been instrumental in the success of the independent Alliance, a group of publishers who banded together in 2005 to increase access to customers and added heft in the market. He won the industry award for sales person of the year in 2004, was shortlisted for the Industry Achievement Award in 2007 and won it in 2008. He won the outstanding Contribution Award from the independent Booksellers Forum in 2009. He has sat on the board of the Independent Publisher Guild since 2004 and was chair in 2008. Previously he has been a board member of the Edinburgh Book Festival.

Anna Rafferty

Managing Director of Penguin Digital, Penguin (UK)

Anna Rafferty is the Managing Director of Penguin Digital, responsible for Penguin Books' UK websites, digital marketing and digital publishing. Having previously worked for a digital marketing agency and as Web Projects Manager for the V&A Museum, she joined Penguin in 2003. Since then Anna has spearheaded a variety of social media-driven initiatives, including Spinebreakers, an interactive site aimed at promoting the world of books and reading to teenagers, BlogaPenguinClassic, BlogaHolidayRead and the online dating site, PenguinDating. Her enthusiasm, dedication and success have put Penguin at the forefront of digital media, with their online work going from strength-to-strength.

In 2009 Anna was awarded the New Media Age Effectiveness award for Greatest Individual Contribution to New Media, beating some of the most high profile figures in digital media.
