GEOGRAPHY IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOK

Background and Objectives

To produce a textbook for the study of geography of Great Britain and the United States for secondary school students who are learning geography through the medium of English and for University students in the geography and English department.

The project started in 2002 as an initiative from a group of teachers supported by the British Council through the Innovation scheme. The textbook was published in September 2004 with Charta publishing house.

The Team

The team was made up of four teachers of English and geography in Brasov and Bucharest who are writing under guidance from a UK consultant.

The course consisted of: a student's book and a teacher's book.

Features of the student's book

  • The textbook was a first attempt to create a geography and English language integrated learning programme for upper secondary students.
  • The syllabus was a framework for the development of geography concepts and knowledge, cognitive skills and language aspects.
  • Raising students’ awareness of environmental aspects is an attitude developed throughout the textbook.
  • The students were encouraged to compare aspects of the geography of Great Britain and that of the United States with aspects of the geography of Romania.
  • The textbook included a glossary of relevant terminology.

The teacher's book, on CD format, included: description of the activities, methodological suggestions, key to the activities, tests and a set of photographs as additional material.
