Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)
PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE TEST FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS
If you are an English teacher, this new test from University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations offers you  unique opportunity to deepen your professional knowledge and earn an international qualification.
WHAT DOES TKT MEAN?
The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a new entry level certification for those teaching English to speakers of other languages. TKT has been developed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).
WHAT DOES TKT CONSIST OF?

TKT tests candidates on their knowledge of how to teach English. It is not an English proficiency test and there is no practical component. The test covers teaching methodology, the language of teaching, the use of resources, lesson planning and classroom management methods.

There are three modules and each one last 1 hour and 20 minutes and contains 80 questions. Each module can be taken independently of the others:

Module 1: Background to language learning and teaching. Including: describing language and language skills; background to language learning; background to language teaching.

Module 2: Planning lessons and the use of resources for language teaching. Including: planning and preparing a lesson or a sequence of lessons; selection and use of resources and materials.

Module 3: Managing the teaching and learning process. Including: teacher and learners’ language in the classroom; classroom management.

A TKT certificate provides evidence that the holder understands the fundamentals of current ELT methodology well enough to access further professional development opportunities through professional publications and journals, electronic fora, workshops and conferences, or simply though sharing ideas with colleagues.

TKT is an entry level certification for the suite of Cambridge teaching awards, including CELTA and DELTA qualifications. Visit http://www.cambridgeesol.org/teaching/index.htm for more informtion.

Who is TKT for?

The test will appeal to teachers from a range of different backgrounds, but especially:

•Pre-service teachers or graduates who would like to supplement their qualification with an international certification in teaching English.

•In-service English teachers who are motivated to develop professionally and perhaps enhance their career opportunities.

•Those who are moving into English teaching from other subjects or professional backgrounds and would like to be better trained for the work.

In addition, TKT may be of interest to regulating authorities or those involved in training who seek a professional benchmarking tool to add value to their existing programmes or for the development of new ones.

Who recognises TKT?

TKT is a new test which was launched in April 2005 after extensive trials. The test is already gaining recognition around the world and has been endorsed by test users within the East and South-east Asian region. The test is currently being taken in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan.

TKT can provide a marketable benchmarking certification for institutions offering English language training to Filipinos and foreigners.

What level of English do I need?
You should ideally have at least an intermediate level of English equivalent to B2 in the Common European framework for languages http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/cef.htm
Are there any other requirements?
None – anyone can take TKT but some kind of preparation is recommended. If you are new to teaching you will require more time than someone who already has some experience.
How can I prepare?

We have a collection of resources which support TKT in our Knowledge and Learning Centre (KLC). You can access these resources if you are registered for the exam or if you are a member of the Teachers Club. Membership is PHP 500 for a year.

We also have copies of the TKT Preparation Coursebook published by the University of Cambridge Press for sale at PHP 1,150 per copy.

You can find a range of TKT preparation materials at www.CambridgeESOL.org/teach/TKT
