Message from the country director

My first few weeks in Pakistan have been spent briefing myself on the wide range of British Council programmes and services in Pakistan, many of which were described in our last newsletter. It is exciting to find a thriving Connecting Classrooms programme here in Pakistan. I was closely involved in designing this for Africa in early 2006. It has subsequently been taken up by other regions, with each region adapting the model to local needs. The common feature across the world is partnership between schools in the UK and schools in other countries.

I joined the British Council as an education adviser in 1988 and remain committed to providing educational opportunity for young people as a means of promoting economic development. I am impressed by other aspects of our work in education, particularly the highly-valued partnership with the Higher Education Commission and the relationship that has been built with NAVTEC.

I look forward to meeting many more of our contacts over the next few months. Operating in Pakistan can be a challenge in the current environment but we will continue to do all we can to ensure that we offer our services across the country.

With best wishes,
David Martin
