We are working in partnership with the Department of Education, Global Action Nepal (GAN) and the Nepal English Language Teachers Association (NELTA) on this 3 year project which aims to improve the ability of Primary School teachers of English to effectively teach the language, especially in remote or marginalised areas.
We are focusing of developing their confidence in using the English language and at the same time developing their teaching methodology skills.
The reason for this is that we have found that the levels of English language of many Primary Schools teachers in some parts of Nepal is so low that they feel unable and lacking in confidence to teach the language.
We have selected three districts for the first year of the project: Kailali, Solukhumbu and Baglung. 220 primary school teachers will receive 120 hours of English language and teaching methodology training over one intensive month from 17 June to 14 July 2008.
The teacher trainers who will go out to the 3 districts are young Bachelor and Master graduates of English who are nobly giving their time and energy during these months to help their colleagues in these remote areas. They themselves have just received a month’s course in teacher training, given by British Council trainers.
Over the next 3 years the project hopes to increase the ability of many more primary school teachers around the country to teach English, so that more primary school children will be able to move onto their secondary schools with the required English language competence.
