Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)

HKBU has a Christian heritage and places dual emphasis on teaching and research. It is located in the district of Kowloon Tong in Kowloon and has a total student body of around 6,800. HKBU has seven faculties/schools: arts, business, Chinese medicine, communication, science, social sciences and visual arts. The university is a world centre for the training of Chinese medicine practitioners and research into the field. There are two separate but neighbouring campuses within close walking distance of each other in Kowloon Tong, and two other campuses in Sha Tin and Kai Tak.

The university has links with 180 colleges and universities globally, including eight UK partners. Information is posted online regarding details of courses available for international exchange and study abroad students. A semester certificate study option is available specifically for overseas students. In the autumn  semester, this programme focuses on cross-cultural communication and management. In the spring semester, the theme is China studies. The course enables students to earn a certificate in addition to their official academic transcript. Credit-bearing Putonghua courses are also offered.

Non-local students are looked after by the International Office. This organises orientation programmes and events, including tours of the city. There is no buddy system but regular activities between international and local students are organised through the university’s Global Café programme. Shared accommodation at the Baptist University Road campus in Kowloon Tong is provided and students can choose whether to room with an international or local student.

In addition, HKBU has a Consul-General-in-Residence Programme where consuls-general from different countries give lectures on campus to foster international awareness, communication and links.
