Involving others and making a real difference

This programme is part of the British Council's global climate change projects, including our Hong Kong's Climate Cool project.

In collaboration with the Science in the Public Service (SIPS) student project competition "Climate Change - what can we do?", Kurt Chan Yuk-pui, a form six student from Buddhist Sum Heung Lam Memorial College, was selected to be the International Climate Champion (ICC), representing Hong Kong, to help spread the word about climate change and to get others involved. Kurt is keen to become a role model in promoting environmental protection and raising awareness of climate change to his wider community. In the final presentation and interview he excelled in his demonstration of his knowledge of the climate issue and commitment to take actions in his personal life and for the society.

Along with two other inspirational young Chinese, Ding Yinghan from Beijing and Wang Yijie from Chongqing, Kurt recently worked with 38 other ICCs (aged 16-18) in London and Kobe - where they have presented a call to action – The Kobe Challenge – to the Environment Ministers to consider and respond to at the Kodomo Kankyo G8+5 summit in Japan.

In London, the ICCs have received communications training, engaged in local activities and met leading and inspirational UK figures in climate change, including Rt Hon Hilary Benn, the UK Secretary of State for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. They have also prepared 3 options for an 'inspirational goal' (the Kobe Challenge), which they need to encourage other young people across the world to vote for one of them through an online voting system to gain a greater sense of consensus.

While in Kobe the ICCs took part in the annual Kobe Festival, visited world heritage temples in Kyoto, toured businesses which have made significant efforts to tackle climate change, and most importantly, finalised their Kobe Challenge before presenting it to the high level meeting.

The Kobe Challenge prepared by the ICCs states:
To tackle climate change, we must recognise the challenge, accept responsibility and respond with integrity; Integrate climate change into all education systems and demonstrate practical solutions to every community; Implement a strict international carbon cap-and-trade system to reduce emissions; Provide technology and funding for those worst hit by the inevitable effects of climate change.

The Climate Champions are helping a generation of young people; building understanding of and action on climate change.

'Though the problem of global warming is being aggravated, people don't seem to take this crisis to heart. As a member of this global village, we ought to do something and figure out solutions to save our world! I'm hoping to see that everyone in every country will laugh hand in hand on a green, glamorous earth in the future.'
