Raising the Role of Media in Monitoring Government Programs

Monitoring government programmes: grants for journalists

Applications for grants under the British Council project Raising the Role of Media in Monitoring Government Programs have now been considered, and we are pleased to announce the names of the seven grant winners. The grants will go to five regional newspapers and two regional radio stations. They will receive financial support to assist them in developing newspaper articles and radio programmes which aim to ensure transparency in state-run programmes.

Selection of the winning bids took place on July 25, 2007 and was the result of thorough and unbiased discussion and scoring by a special British Council evaluation committee comprising leading Georgian mass media journalists.

The seven winners are:

Newspapers:

• Guria News (Chokhatauri)

• Akhali Gazeti (Kutaisi)

• Khalkhis Gazeti (Gori)

• Samkhretis Karibche (Akhaltsikhe)

• Spectri (Gurjaani)

Radio stations:

• Hereti (Lagodekhi Region)

• Zveli Khalakhi (Imereti Region)

Grants will be used to support the development of programme content and, where necessary, technical improvements at the newspaper and radio departments.

The articles and radio programmes presented to the selection board focused on the monitoring of local government bodies and other state institutions. Applicants were asked to show how their articles and programmes would describe and analyse existing problems and familiarise the public with state programs and their implementation progress.
