International English Language Testing System

Are you planning to study or train abroad? Are you applying to an institution and need to prove your level of English? Do you need to raise your standard in English? Then we can help you with an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

WHERE IS IELTS RECOGNISED?
IELTS is accepted by most British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions. American academic institutions are also increasingly accepting IELTS for admission purposes.

WHAT TYPE OF IELTS SHOULD YOU TAKE?
You can take either the Academic or General Training Reading and Writing modules. Choose the Academic Reading and Writing module if you are planning to undertake academic study in a higher education institution.

If you are planning to undertake non-academic training or apply for immigration to Australia, Canada or New Zealand, we recommend you take the General Training Reading and Writing modules.

You will be tested in listening, reading, writing and speaking whichever module you decide to take. If you are unsure of which module to take, please ask our exams officer.

HOW MUCH WILL IELTS COST?
Fees for the exam are Birr 1750 for either the General Training or Academic modules. Once you have your money ready you can register at our centre in Addis Ababa.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE TEST BE?
We run a testing service twice a month. The IELTS test dates for mid 2008 are:

Tests begin at 0900. You will take the Writing, Reading and Listening papers together. The writing and reading papers last for two hours and the listening paper for 40 minutes.

The IELTS speaking test lasts for a maximum of fifteen minutes. You will be given an appointment up to seven days before or after your listening, reading and writing test date.

How do I register?
You will need to bring the following to our centre in Addis Ababa:

A completed application form
The test fee, Birr 1,750
Two passport size photos
A passport or national ID card

When you register, the date of your test will be confirmed.

When and how will you receive your results?
Your results will be ready within thirteen days and you can collect them from our centre. You will be given a band score for each of the four papers as well as an overall band score along with a brief description of your level. The result is valid for two years.

Results will be returned to you as a Test Report Form. There is no pass or fail mark. Scores are given on a band scale of one to nine (with one being a non-user and nine being an expert user of the English language). Download or read through a copy of the IELTS handbook for more detailed information.

How can I prepare?
You can take a one-day preparation course to help you prepare for the IELTS test. Click here to find out more.  You can also purchase an IELTS practice material together with a CD from our library for Birr 140. If you are a member of the library you can access the materials free of charge.

If you are sitting an IELTS English test, you may want to attend an IELTS workshop to help you achieve the best results.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE TEST AND WORKSHOPS BE?
Although test dates vary, we run a regular service. Either view the events calendar or select your country or town from the drop down box to find out when you can take your test.
