British Council China Beijing Office: Arts Information Officer

The British Council in Beijing is seeking an Information Officer for the arts team to manage the website and information needs of the China-UK Connections through Culture programme. This post has a fixed-term contract for 12 months.

Main duties

  • Maintain up to date information on the Connections through Culture area of the British Council website
  • Edit monthly Connections through Culture e-newsletter
  • Commission content and manage suppliers
  • Monitor and manage on-line communities
  • Assist with project delivery as required

Salary and benefits

The above position includes a gross salary of RMB 8589 per month before deductions.

British Council China Beijing Office: Senior Communications Manager

Who are we?

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for education and cultural relations. We build engagement and trust for the UK through the exchange of knowledge and ideas between people worldwide.

Founded in 1934, our first office in China opened in Chongqing in 1943. Today, we employ nearly 500 staff in five offices in the China region (Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong). We are independent of government, but in mainland China operate as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy and Consulates-General.

We have an impressive record of achievement in our China region. Our work enables intercultural dialogue and positive social change, we support the UK’s creative and knowledge economy and we are dedicated to promoting co-operation on climate change.

You’ll know our work marketing the UK as a study destination supports over 30,000 new students a year who choose the UK as a study destination. You’ll also know us for the 300,000 people who take IELTS as well as the tens of thousand who study at our Hong Kong teaching centre annually, and the 10,000 learners and teachers who visit our language learning web sites each day.

However, this is just a part of our much wider cultural relations work. You may not know about the 200 able-bodied and disabled people taking part in our Young Advocates programme around the Beijing Paralympics, or the thousands of school children and teachers involved annually in school exchanges we coordinate. Our Climate Cool project builds networks of young school ambassadors supporting individual action as well as equipping the media with the tools they need to engage audiences in one of today’s most important international issues.

What is the job?

As the national Public Relations lead you will be responsible for Media Relations Strategy and Resource Planning in China; as well as Media Relations Management for large-scale national projects and those taking place in Beijing. You will provide professional communications advice for project teams and implement appropriate communications planning.

You’ll maintain excellent relationships with key print and broadcast media in Beijing and work to develop effective long-term partnerships with them.

You’ll directly lead two Communications Officers based in Beijing and have responsibility for the professional standards and development of the Communications Managers and Officers throughout China.

Who are you?

You’ll be a Communications professional capable of working on several projects at once. Enthusiastic and industrious you will work closely with colleagues to ensure excellent media coverage for British Council events and programmes.

With a good news sense you’ll know what journalists want to know and when they need to know it.

You’ll have a thorough eye for detail and an engaging writing style; and you’ll offer creative thinking to the British Council and innovative ways of promoting our agenda.

You’ll provide your team and the British Council with confidence in the way it works with the media.

Working as a member of the China region's senior management team, you’ll be responsible for ensuring that all of our different teams have a shared understanding of our audiences in the region, and helping them implement large-scale projects and products that engage and attract audiences, while delivering British Council objectives effectively.

You’ll act as a member of our global marketing and communications team bringing together our ten regions, sharing good practice and ensuring in China we develop a level of marketing expertise that matches our importance in the network.

You’ll directly lead our integrated communications team across the region, supporting our project and product teams, as well as developing effective long-term partnerships with the media.

Who are you?

You’ll be a high calibre, mature and proven strategic thinker in marketing, but with a background of hands-on experience of marketing and communications. You’ll know how to commission and interpret effective research, and how to link together diverse products and services under a single brand. You’ll have the communication skills to sell your vision and the leadership skills to bring together different teams under a common understanding.

Although satisfied with your current role, you’ll be at a stage in your career where you’d like to use your skills and experience for something more worthwhile than purely increasing profitability.

IELTS Centre Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing: IELTS Examiners



We are looking for suitably qualified and experienced individuals to join our team of IELTS examiners in mainland China.


You will need:

An undergraduate degree or a qualification which can be demonstrated to be an equivalent to an undergraduate degree.

A TEFL/TESOL qualification from a recognised institution (at minimum certificate level) or EFL / ESOL related studies completed as part of an undergraduate / post graduate award course from a recognised institution (minimum certificate level equivalent) or A degree in Education (if supported by an undergraduate degree which includes studies focused on English language at point 1 above) .

A minimum of three years full-time relevant teaching experience (or equivalent part time) is required*. If an applicant’s EFL / ESOL qualification is at certificate level (or equivalent), one of the three years full-time teaching experience must be post EFL / ESOL certificate qualification. If the EFL / ESOL qualification is at Diploma level or higher, teaching experience post EFL / ESOL qualification is not required.

The required professional attributes and interpersonal skills.

*Note: ‘Full-time teaching’ is classified as a minimum of 14 hours of face-to-face teaching per week
