Welsh language project
Our partnership work with Patagonia, Argentina

What is the Welsh Language Project?
The aim of the project is to promote and develop the Welsh language in the Chubut region of Patagonia. Since its inception in 1997, the project has recruited teachers from Wales to undertake teaching placements in the Welsh speaking communities in Patagonia and provide training and leadership to the team of local tutors. Through this we aim to build Welsh teaching capacity and improve the Welsh language provision in these regions. As part of the project, we've also welcomed over 45 Welsh tutors and learners from Patagonia to Wales to provide them with Welsh language training and observation opportunities in Welsh schools. Many have subsequently taken on Welsh language teaching roles in their communities.

How is the project funded?
The project is primarily funded by Welsh Government as well as contributions from the Wales Argentine Society (Cymdeithas Cymru-Ariannin) and from British Council Wales.

Who’s involved in the project?
The British Council manages the project on behalf of Welsh Government.  In Wales, the project is governed by a project committee and made up of representatives from British Council Wales, Menter Patagonia under the auspices of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, the Wales-Argentine Society (Cymdeithas Cymru-Ariannin), Welsh Government and Cardiff University’s Welsh Centre for Adults. We also work closely with the local communities in Patagonia to develop and support the project.
