British Council Wales and the Wales International Dimension in Education (WIDE) network presented their prestigious 2009 Awards on 10th July at the All Nations Centre, Cardiff, celebrating some of the fantastic international work being carried out by Welsh schools. There were five categories this year:
The Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, Jane Hutt AM, said: “I have been hugely impressed by the range and quality of international education activity being undertaken by schools across Wales, and I am honoured to have been asked to participate in these Welsh International Education Awards by selecting the winner for this new Minister’s Award for sustained International Education.... It recognises the dynamism and innovation that is a feature in many of our schools, and highlights the impact this agenda can have on effective learning environments. Of course, the biggest reward is the provision of enhanced learning opportunities for our children. And I am grateful to all those schools which, through their hard work, made my decision for this Award such a difficult one.' Pupils and staff from the shortlisted schools attended the event and took part in workshops around this year's theme –China and included Tai Chi, calligraphy, paper cutting, face painting and Chinese fan dance.
