Being an Erasmus student is an experience that will stay with you for life. As well as improving your language skills and your CV, your Erasmus experience will really help you to stand out in the job market, not to mention give you a great network of friends and some fantastic travel opportunities.
Erasmus enables you to study in another university or carry out a work placement in one of 30 other countries in Europe, as part of your degree course. You don’t have to be doing a language course; students from all subject areas can take part, with many universities running courses in English. Most students go for three -12 months, but students on short-term courses, such as foundation courses, who can do a work placement only, can go for shorter periods of time – from as little as two months.

To be eligible, students must be formally registered at an HEI that holds an Erasmus University Charter. You must be undertaking higher education studies, leading to a recognised degree or other recognised tertiary level qualification up to and including the level of doctorate. You can also take part if you are enrolled at an FE/HE institution that holds an Erasmus University Charter and are carrying out a short term higher vocational education course, which includes foundation degree courses. Part-time students are eligible to participate providing they study full-time during their mobility period.
All students currently receive a flat rate grant provided by the European Union of €225 a month which contributes towards the extra costs arising from studying abroad. There is an additional grant and funding available for students on short-term courses.
Erasmus grants in the UK are paid through your home institution and are paid in addition to the standard grants or loans to which you are entitled. Please remember that this is a supplementary, non-repayable grant intended to offset any additional expenses you may incur while you are abroad. During your Erasmus study, you continue to receive any student grant or loan to which you are entitled. You do not pay any tuition fees to the university you are visiting. If you spend a full academic year on an Erasmus study period or work placement, you do not pay any UK tuition fees for that year. However, if you study abroad for less than a year, you will have to pay the UK tuition fees.
The Erasmus grant is not means-tested. To be eligible for an Erasmus grant you must:
- be registered at a UK Higher Education institution which holds an Erasmus University Charter (EUC).
- spend an approved study or work period of between 3 to 12 months at an institution which holds an EUC in another EU, EEA or candidate country (for students on short term higher vocational education courses, the minimum period on a work placement is two months).
