Cityscapers: Cardiff Chimera 2020
Cardiff, 27 March 2009, the second international Cityscapers studio will launch in Cardiff.

SMALL CITY: BIG NEIGHBOURHOOD:
EXPLORATION OF NEIGHBOURHOODS IN CARDIFF

March 27 - April 9 2009

For two weeks in March/April 2009 more than sixty outstanding designers, planners, artists, architects and engineers from Wales, Australia, China, India, Japan and Singapore will work on a live design brief in an intensive two week studio in Cardiff.

About Cityscapers: Cardiff Chimera 2020

Cityscapers: Cardiff Chimera2020 will be the unique vision of over seventy artists, designers, architects, urban planners and filmmakers as they come together to investigate and respond to the relationships and future inhabitation of Cardiff, and it’s neighbourhoods as a model for small waterfront cities in the year 2020. The participating students will create solutions which are specific to the city but of international relevance deriving new propositions for Cardiff’s future.
Using their own approaches to professional practice, personal histories and unique experiences shaped by their own cities the participants from around the world including Wales, Australia, China, India, Japan and Singapore will work together as part of an intensive two-week studio in Cardiff.
The studio will look firmly towards the future asking how we will tackle universal issues of global warming, population growth, natural disaster and changing urban economies when designing neighbourhoods of the future and how these issues might specifically be addressed in the city of Cardiff in 2020 and beyond.

During the studio participants will research Cardiff and meet with a wide range of local organisations, artists, architects and residents to inform their work. The culmination of the studio will take the form of an installation of the students’ films, a creative representation of the multiplicity of readings, responses and solutions shaped through their neighbourhood investigations and will launch on 9th April before touring to participating countries within East Asia throughout 2009.

The events programme supporting the studio will entail key lectures by experts from Cardiff, across the UK and international practitioners who will explore some of the issues of the studio through presentations of their own work or debate: filmmakers Tapio Snellman and Christian Grou from Neutral; Wiard Sterk, Executive Director of Safle, the development agency for Public Art in Wales, discusses art in the City with poet Peter Finch, artist Jennie Savage and performance artist Emma Price; and Design Commission for Wales will convene a debate with partners from Design Circle (RSAW), chaired by Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, Presiding Officer, National Assembly for Wales.
