Takeover Cardiff will see major cultural venues in the city handed over to young people (14-25) to curate, develop and participate in programmes to engage their peers, showcasing new and emerging Welsh and international talent!
Working with our partners, we will bring together arts, education, society and youth activity via the platform of internationalism to empower young people within iconic venues around Cardiff.
Opening in The Senedd by the Deputy Presiding Officer, David Melding AM at 11:00 am with performances from youth organisations and schools working with Literature Wales and Rubicon Dance. The day will then lead a path around the city which will include street dancers, slam poets, bloggers, buskers, musicians and animators, all of the activities will be recorded by young filmmakers, culminating in the finale in Chapter Arts Centre. All events will be free and open to the public, and will also include the following venues being taken over Cardiff Central Library, National Museum Cardiff and the Wales Millennium Centre.
International experts across a variety of areas including dance, literature and filmmaking, will work alongside young people in a series of interactive workshops, which will culminate in live performances on the 12th of October. The countries participating in this one-day taster will include America, Ethiopia, Norway, South Africa and Wales to create a truly international event.
The resulting programme of activity will be evaluated and feed into the Arts Council of Wales consultation on Youth led Arts festivals. This will create a body of evidence which will inform and facilitate the development of a week-long programme in 2014 with a view to creating a significant international youth led event in the cultural calendar.
With our partner organisations: Chapter Arts Centre, Community Music Wales, Cardiff Central Library, Grassroots Cardiff, Iris Prize Festival, Literature Wales, National Assembly for Wales, National Museum Cardiff, Rubicon Dance, St David’s Hall, Wales Millennium Centre, Young Critics, Welsh Music Foundation, Young Promoters Network and Zoom Cymru, we have coordinated a day of international events, showcasing the best of Wales in education and arts.
