NATIONAL DANCE COMPANY WALES
TOUR INDIA FOR THE FIRST TIME

Following a successful development trip supported by the British Council Connections Through Culture India-UK scheme, National Dance Company Wales is working with STEM Dance Kampni, based in Bangalore, India on a 3-city tour of India from 25th November to 07th December 2011. The company will perform at venues in Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi, and will lead master classes and discussions during their visit.

The tour is supported by, British Council, Wales Arts International and Welsh Government.

The tour will include performances of internationally acclaimed choreographers;
B/olero & Black Milk by Ohad Naharin and By Singing Light by Stephen Petronio.

Ohad Naharin, one of the world’s great choreographers, presents B/olero, a hypnotic female duet with elegant costumes set to Ravel’s famous score while Black Milk is a ceremonial dance that encapsulates the tribal physicality of five male dancers.

Inspired by the poetry of renowned Welsh writer, Dylan Thomas, Petronio created By Singing Light, a profound dance response to the power of Thomas as an artist of international stature. Performed to the lyrical, yet driven music of Son Lux, influenced by the Welsh songs of Mansel Thomas, this is a moving dance from one of the world’s leading choreographers.

Lee Johnston, National Dance Company Wales dancer said:
“We’ve been on many great international tours in the past 7 years I’ve been with the Company including China, Cuba and mainland Europe. I’m very excited to be representing Wales in India with such a special work as By Singing Light especially as it includes our famous poet Dylan Thomas’ work”

The relationship between NDCWales and STEM began in August 2010 when the British Council supported choreographers exchange visits by the resident choreographers from each company and they were able to explore each other’s companies, meet a wide variety of people and plan future collaboration.

Madhu Nataraj, Founder & Director Natya & STEM Dance Kampni:
“We are honoured to be bringing NDCWales to India to perform as a very special part of our international festival Namma Bengaluru Dance Utsav. Our relationship with NDCWales is a significant partnership for us, exchanging artists, ideas, training opportunities as well as performances and tours in each others countries”

STEM Dance Kampni will be visiting Wales in Spring 2012 for a tour of Wales.
